Sound has been an essential part of what connects us to one another. As you think of your favorite playlist, focus on what stands out as if engulfs your whole being…the tempo, the echo layered of voices, or instruments intensity?
If you ever have had music transcend in and out of one ear and sway into another, then you are experiencing a small form of bilateral stimulation. Bilateral stimulation is used in a therapeutic practice noted as Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy. This form of therapy is addressing deep rooted trauma using bilateral stimulation activating both hemispheres of the brain. It begins to activate your parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for the rest and digest response bringing your state of anxiety into a state of tranquility as sessions go on.
As you recognize the sound frequency beginning to cover you body in a blanket of soothe, your neuroplasticity is developing different pathways to aid in healthier responses to stress.
Sound baths are a form of meditation using various instruments filling the space around you. The frequency of each bowl indicates a different part of your body being pinged. As you learn about bilateral stimulation in EMDR and sound baths, both aim in different therapeutic formats (EMDR is conducted by a certified EMDR licensed therapist and sound baths are conducted by a Sound Healer) to support your ability to regulate the nervous system, emotional processing, and reduce stress.
